The Armenian Catholic Mekhitarist order’s main monastery is on the island of San Lazzaro in Venice, established in 1717 – Byron would famously swam out to it to relieve his boredom by learning Armenian, when not being, in Lady Caroline Lamb’s words, his usual ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’ self.
