In this Ottomans Online seminar hosted by the Skilliter Centre in Cambridge, Professor Yavuz Köse of the University of Vienna, co-author with Onur İnal of Seeds of Power: Explorations in Ottoman Environmental History, examines documents in the renowned library Mekhitarist Monastery, Vienna. The Armenian Catholic Mekhitarist order’s main monastery is on the island of San Lazzaro in Venice, established in 1717 – Byron would famously swam out to it to relieve his boredom by learning Armenian, when not being, in Lady Caroline Lamb’s words, his usual ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’ self.
