Zilberman Gallery and Project Space, Mısır Apt, İstiklâl Cad 163, Floors 2 & 3, D5 & 10, Galatasaray, Beyoğlu, 34433 İstanbul

Salute! is a follow-up to the Turkish artist Eşref Yıldırım’s previous exhibition, Nobody’s Death hosted by Galeri Zilberman in 2012. In Nobody’s Death, Yıldırım explored visibility by using the newspaper as a medium. In this exhibition, the artist discusses the value placed on human life. The subject matter is those who die under the custodianship of the state or those who die because of the state’s mistakes: suspicious soldier deaths, the Roboski massacre and those who are mysteriously ‘lost’.

At centre of the exhibition are paintings (above) which are produced on green canvases and displayed as flags showing faces of dead soldiers. The artist’s experimentation in painting mimics the tensions he feels with his subject matter. The accompanying collection of 34 eye masks (below) have been woven in honour of those who were massacred in Roboski. Prices are in the TL10,000 range.
