Seeing the Black Panther

Elmas Deniz

May 9, 2014 – June 14, 2014

Pilot, Sıraselviler Caddesi No. 83/2, Beyoğlu, Istanbul

The young Turkish artist Elmas Deniz contemplates global power structures, state control, urbanism, the economy and globalisation in her oeuvre. This exhibition features a video, sculptures, drawings, texts and installations the artist has produced during the Iaspis artist residency programme in Stockholm.

A series of works Deniz developed around a five-century old oak tree constitute the basis of the exhibition. The artist wanting to buy a tree as a symbolic gesture, regardless of her own economic situation, comprises both the starting point and the cipher for the central video. She questions the position of nature which is wedged between private property and commercial goods. The value system – especially the monetary valuation of something – is scrutinised through a series of drawings.
