Sophia Vari: Sculptures and Paintings

October 9, 2013 – January 14, 2014

The Pera Museum, Meşrutiyet Cad 65, Tepebaşı, Beyoğlu, Istanbul

Curated by Marisa Oropesa and Maria Toral, Greek artist Sophia Vari’s paintings – often inspired by the colours of the Mediterranean – and monumental sculptures are being exhibited in Istanbul for the first time.

Vari started out as a painter, but in her search for different forms of expression, she found sculpture. Vari aims to take geometry, volume and shapes, and humanise these elements using a variety of forms and materials. Her massive sculptures made of heavy marble and bronze are one example. Presenting her works in art spaces and city squares around the world throughout her career, Vari continues her search for the relationship which exists between volume, layers and surfaces with her intricately-shaped sculptures and textured paintings.
