The Anatomy of a Tradition: 150 Years of Robert College

May 15, 2013 – August 31, 2013

Istanbul Research Institute, Meşrutiyet Caddesi No: 47, Tepebaşı, Beyoğlu, Istanbul

To mark the 150th anniversary of Robert College, one of the oldest educational institutions in Istanbul, an exhibition which traces the College’s history will be displayed in collaboration with the Istanbul Research Institute. Curated by Cem Akaş, the exhibition will showcase photographs and objects that will give glimpses into aspects of the College’s educational, cultural, social, and intellectual life.

Robert College was founded in 1863 by Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher R. Robert, two American educators and propagators of meritocracy. It was the first American school to be established outside of the country and on Ottoman territory. Surviving revolutions, wars, natural disasters and epidemics, Robert College has educated prime ministers, statesmen, writers, artists, musicians, athletes, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and businessmen, just to name a few.
