The Big Country and Other Stories

Stephen Chambers

May 7, 2014 – July 20, 2014

The Pera Museum, Meşrutiyet Cad 65, Tepebaşı, Beyoğlu, Istanbul

This exhibition curated by Edith Devaney, the curator of Contemporary Projects at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, presents a survey of the English artist Stephen Chambers’ paintings and graphic works.

At the centre of the exhibition is Chambers’ work ‘The Big Country’. Inspired by the landscape and scale of the 1958 American Western film of the same name, Chambers’ immense body of work shows a myriad of fictional encounters between real and imagined historical figures.

Telling a story is also a feature in many of Chambers’ works and his writings are often a stimulus for this, as seen in the ‘Flemish Proverbs’ series, which Chambers produced especially for this exhibition.
