The First Bodrum Biennial

September 2, 2013 – November 1, 2013

Various locations

The first-ever biennial to be staged in the attractive Aegean town of Bodrum – historically called Halicarnassus – takes its inspiration from the novel Aganta Burina Burinata by 20th-century Turkish author Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, known as the Fisherman of Halicarnassusm, who was Turkey’s first professional travelogue and self-professed lover of Bodrum.

Curated by Banu Grote and conceived by renowned artist Gülsün Erbil, the founder of the Istanbul Biennial and Gallery X, the biennial will host 50 foreign and Turkish artists, including Pakistani painter Ayessha Quraishi, Turkish artist Barış Ger and Polish multi-media artist Bogna Burska. Visit the Festival’s website for the full lists of artists.

The main venue will be the historic Bodrum Castle, built by the Knights Hospitaller in 1404 (under the German knight-architect Heinrich Schlegelholt). The Sevket Sabanci Cultural Center and the Osmanli Tersanesi Art Gallery will provide the secondary venues.
