Fausto Zonaro’s portrait is of the Istanbul-born Adolphe Thalasso, a Greek poet and influential art critic who published an important article on the Sultan’s artist in Figaro Illustré in 1907. The article earned Thalasso a Mecidiye medal from an appreciative Sultan Abdülhamid. Dressed in Ottoman costume, he smokes a nargile with a view of the busy Golden Horn and the Yeni Cami behind him.
