İpek Duben

April 28, 2015 – June 28, 2015

SALT Galata, Bankalar Caddesi No. 11, Karaköy

The artist İpek Duben whose oeuvre is concerned with the ‘outsider’, the ‘other’ and the Western gaze of the ‘Turk’ presents her multi-screen video installation which explores how the majority of Turkish society views those it considers as ‘others’ and how these marginalised others perceive one another.

The eponymous work shows 24 people who come from a diversity of ethnic origins, belief systems and sexual orientations. Kurds, Alevis, Zazas, Rums, Armenians, Jews, Romanis, people who identify as LGBT, covered Muslim women and women who suffer domestic violence recount their experiences both to each other and to the audience. They discuss their attitudes, prejudices and preconceptions as if they were at a roundtable. Highly recommended.
