When Joy and Robert set out for the Shetland Islands in the summer of 2021, it was to pursue a project of their own. But they soon discovered The Pirate, Sir Walter Scott’s novel set in Shetland, which was hugely popular in the nineteenth century, yet is one of his least known novels now.
The Pirate forms the focus of this event. Scott’s romantic adventure story is discussed and analysed, with particular note taken of Scott’s treatment of a woman’s place in society, as it is revealed not only in this work, but in some of his other novels, too.
