Woven Paradise

A journey through the Anatolian textile craft of the 18th and 19th centuries

October 24, 2016 – December 3, 2016
Tues–Sat 14.00–18.00 or by appointment

Studio Bumiller, University Museum Islamic Art, Naunynstrasse 68, Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany

The collector Martin Posth will be presenting a selection from his extensive rug collection in this exhibition. Berlin hasn’t seen an exhibition of oriental rugs this large – 43 Anatolian rugs and 13 kilims from the 18th and 19th centuries will be shown – in almost ten years.

The exhibition highlights the centuries-old history of carpet knotting and the influence that diverse cultures have had on the Turkish-Anatolian region. At the same time, it offers an overview of the different types of Anatolian rugs and kilims, introducing the viewer to their world of colour, ornamentation, variety of design and symbolism. Prayer rugs and nomadic rugs, funeral rugs, rugs from Anatolia’s Christian communities, and full pile carpets which served as beds will be on view.

A comprehensive catalogue, presented both in German and English, will accompany the exhibition.
