Traditionally, European landscape perception started with Petrarch’s climb on Mont Ventoux in the 14th century, leading to a single cultural view of European landscapes that persists today. However, the presenter argues for a more inclusive narrative that considers the diverse cultural perspectives that emerged in Early Modern Europe. To illustrate this, they introduce the Ottoman interpretation of Greek landscapes as an example of cultural diversity, using rural and urban examples in Greece influenced by the Ottomans. Panagiotis Kontolaimos, a PhD holder from the National Technical University of Athens, specializes in Ottoman Urbanism, architecture, and urban development, with a focus on landscape in Ottoman culture.
