Floating Islands Istanbul Modern’s ninth collection exhibition, “Floating Islands,” is spread across different areas of the museum, in addition to the exhibition hall.
The exhibition presents a chronological overview of the development and transformation of the Turkish art scene from 1945 to the present, drawing from the museum’s collection. Spanning a variety of subjects and materials, from abstract trends to figurative approaches, installations to videos, the exhibition showcases the historical development of art and highlights the interactions between artists. Each work reflects the contemporary trends of its time while also providing the viewer with insights into the artists’ unique styles.
“Floating Islands” is a title dedicated to the unique, unconventional imaginations and spheres of influence of the artists. It both underlines their sense of belonging to a place and emphasizes the impact of their thoughts and works that transcend borders and geographies.
The catalog prepared as part of “Floating Islands” includes photographs of the works in the exhibition and visuals from the exhibition, as well as a conceptual framework written by exhibition curator Deniz Pehlivaner and Fırat Arapoğlu’s text titled “A Vertical Gaze”.
