The Memorial lecture for Professor David Hawkins FBA, to be held on April 5 at the Society of Antiquaries and online, will be part of the BIAA Oliver Gurney Memorial Lecture series, as David learnt Hittite with Oliver Gurney. It is being co-hosted by BIAA and British Institute for the Study of Iraq (BISI).
The lecture How to say “no” in Hieroglyphic Luwian and other Decipherments of David Hawkins will be given by Mark Weeden (UCL), who was one of David Hawkins’ PhD students. Andrew George, a colleague of David’s at SOAS for 25 years, will give a short reminiscence about David Hawkins.
The lecture will be followed by a drinks and canapé reception.
David Hawkins was Emeritus Professor of Ancient Anatolian Languages, SOAS, University of London. He passed away on Sunday December 17, 2023. David was a long term supporter of the BIAA and was President of the Institute from 2008 to 2022. See this BIAA news story for more on David Hawkins.
Mark Weeden was David Hawkins’ last PhD student and collaborated with him on numerous projects after his retirement. He now works at UCL as Associate Professor of Ancient Middle Eastern Languages in the Department of Greek and Latin.
