Jewish Identity Engraved on Stones

November 4, 2021 – November 21, 2021
Sunday – Friday, 10.00 – 17.00

The Museum of Turkish Jews, Perçemli Sokak, Karaköy, Beyoğlu, İstanbul

The Quincentenial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews has opened the Jewish Identity Engraved on Stones in the historic Zulfaris Synagogue in Karaköy (also known as the “Kal Kadoş Galata” Synagogue). Curated by architect Çiğdem Öner, the exhibit presents archaeological finds such as tombstones, inscriptions, objects and synagogue ruins that attest to Jewish presence in the region for the past 2600 years.

Information about and objects from the ancient synagogues of Andriake, Sardes, Priene, Limyra and Miletos are featured in the exhibition, as well as some models and three-dimensional restitution proposals of the buildings.

The Jewish Identity Engraved on Stones exhibition, which is an invitation to further research and emphasize the Jewish presence in Anatolia, will offer an interesting perspective especially to archeology and history professionals as well as enthusiasts.
