This talk will present epigraphical finds from Quarry GO3C, one of the marble quarries at Göktepe near Muğla, recorded during a geo-archaeological survey in 2014.
This study was a part of the project Marmora Asiatica, financed by the National Science Centre of the Republic of Poland (grant agreement number 2012/07/E/HS3/03971), and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey and the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration of the Republic of Turkey (MTA). Paweł Nowakowski and Dagmara Wielgosz-Rondolino examined a dossier of both already known and newly recorded rock inscriptions and textual and pictorial graffiti (prominently including crosses, an invocation of Saint George, and an ownership inscription), which throw new light on the history of the quarry.
Paweł Nowakowski is a lecturer in ancient history at the University of Warsaw. He has been broadly researching late antique inscriptions from the Eastern Mediterranean, especially as evidence for the origins of the cult of saints in Anatolia. His recent project explores the choice of language in late antique inscriptions in Syria, Palestine, and Arabia.
Dagmara Wielgosz-Rondolino is a lecturer in archaeology at the University of Warsaw. She has been involved in fieldwork on a number of sites, including Palmyra, Sagalassos. More recently she has been conducting geo-archaeological surveys at the marble quarries of Dokimeion/İscehisar, Altıntaş, Göktepe, and Prokonnesos.
