Where Are We?

April 29, 2023 – September 3, 2023

Erimtan Archaeology and Arts Museum, Kale Mahallesi, Gözcü Sokak No: 10, Altındağ, Ankara

The Erimtan Archaeology and Arts Museum hosts the Maçka Art Gallery exhibition ‘Where are We?’, with added works by artists based in Ankara today. Curated by Didem Çapa, the exhibition examines Turkish urbanisation and its effects in the last 70 years through the eyes of contemporary artists. Modern art depicting bleak cityscapes and crumbling architecture questions how urbanisation has changed people’s relationship with their sense of place and links to the past. In a way it is the archaeology of the future. Slightly less pleasing aesthetically than a Phoenician tear bottle, but mesmerisngly puzzling all the same. No doubt whole university departments will be devoted to the study cement.

The exhibition showcases art from 24 sculptors and painters, contemporary and modern: Akın Güreş (Bingöl, 1988), Ayşen Urfalıoğlu (Istanbul, 1967), Esra Carus (Istanbul, 1968), Fatih Kızılcan (Köyceğiz, 1961), Fırat Engin (Ankara, 1982), Füreya Koral (Büyükada 1910 – Istanbul, 1997), [Gönül Nuhoğlu|(https://www.artmajeur.com/gonul-nuhoglu) (Istanbul, 1961), Güneş Çınar (Istanbul, 1980) Hakan Gündüz, Halit Demirel, İrfan Önürmen, Murat Germen, Mustafa Duymaz, Nevzat Sayın, Oğuz Kaleli, Ömür Tokgöz, Rabia Seyhan, Rüçhan Şahinoğlu, Serhat Kiraz, Setenay Alpsoy, Seyhun Topuz, Sidar Baki, Yunus Çermik and Yusuf Murat Şen.
