Byzantine and Christian Museum

22 Vassilis Sofias, 106 75 Athens

The most important museum devoted to the Byzantine Empire has been created out of a 19th-century Tuscan-style villa built around a spacious central courtyard for the French Duchesse de Plaisance. Renovated for the 2004 Olympics, it has underground rooms and a new wing, with a rich display of icons, furniture, decorative arts, books and manuscripts, mostly from the 16th to the 18th centuries, and there is a full account of the rise and fall of Byzantium.
