The house where Ismail Bey Gaspıralı lived and published the influential Tercüman Newspaper, launched in 1783. His educational reforms brought literacy to millions of Muslims all from Kazan to India and more than 5000 schools were using his treaching methods all over the Russian Empire. The house, on the road from the Khans’ Palace to Salacık, where he was buried behind the mausoleum of the early Giray khans, is now a modest museum, complete with desk, fez and photographs.
