This major art gallery has around 4.000 paintings, sculptures, installations, and videos as well as 300.000 drawings and prints, Dating from 1671, when the city bought a collection from a local collector, Basilius Amerbach, it is one of the oldest galleries in Europe. It has a fine collection of paintings of the northern Renaissance, as well as 19th and 20th century masters. A museum for contemporary art , Gegenwartskunst, was added in 1980 and in 2016 a third building opened across the street, connected by an underground passage.
