Douglas Scott Brookes teaches courses in Ottoman language and culture at the University of California, Berkeley. His first book, The Ottoman Gentleman of the Sixteenth Century, translated the intricate portrait of Ottoman life penned in 1599 by famed historian Gelibolulu Mustafa Âli.
