Bonhams: Islamic and Indian Art (Autumn 2013)

The Islamic and Indian Art department holds two sales a year covering a wide range of art and artefacts dating from the 9th to the 19th centuries. This includes Arabic and Persian manuscripts, pottery, metalwork and glass, ivory, jewellery and stonework, Ottoman Turkish works of art (silver, textiles, arms and armour and Iznik pottery), and later Persian material. Within the sphere of Indian art, we feature in particular miniature paintings of the 16th to 19th centuries as well as Bidri ware and other metalwork, ivory, textiles and jewellery.

Lot 10: An unusual large Samanid pottery Bowl,Chach, Central Asia, 10th Century. Of deep form on a low, wide foot, with everted rim, underglaze painted in deep brown and cream with continuous interlocking chains on a densely decorated ground of dots, the underside with repeated abstract spray of leaves. 38cm. diam.

Lot 86: A Ming Export blue and white porcelain Dish depicting seated Safavid figures, made for the Persian market, China, circa 1520. The central medallion depicting two figures within a trailing floral band, the sides with alternating floral and figural panels, the exterior of the rim with further floral panels, fitted with a brass suspension device, old labels; with receipt for purchase from E & J Frankel.32 cm. diam.

Lot 146: A calligraphic composition signed by Mehmed Ali Efendi Çirçili, Ottoman Turkey, dated AH 1288/AD 1871-72.
Arabic manuscript on paper, the text consisting of a verse from the Qur'an written in mirror image in thuluth script in black ink on a grey ground, orange border, outer border with stylised rococo sprays in yellow on a dark blue ground, framed. 305 x 420 mm.
