The Camerata Salzburg, conducted by Giovanni Guzzo (who is also the konzertmeister – i.e., head of the first violins), first accompanies the much-celebrated French pianist Hélène Grimaud in Brahms’s 1858 Piano Concerto No 1 in D minor, Opus 15. In the second half, they play Brahms’s Serenade for Strings No 1 in D major, Opus 11, written at the same time as the composer was working on his first piano concerto. Before the concert (at 19:00), there is a talk – in Turkish – by Aydın Büke and Murat Cem Orhan on the two works.
Hélène Grimaud, a renowned interpreter of Brahms, has many interests: she has founded a wildlife sanctuary for wolves in New York, is a member of the ‘Musicians for Human Rights’ organisation, and has written three novels. The Camerata Salzburg chamber orchestra, founded in 1952, is considered one of the leading representatives of the Viennese school.
