The Yunus Emre Institute in London screens Restoring the Balance, an episode from Al Jazeera English’s earthrise documentary series (We Are Nature), followed by a talk and Q&A with the award-winning director Amanda Burrell, who asks: What role could a major religion play in tackling the climate and ecological crisis?
In this episode, Burrell traces the journey of the groundbreaking Islamic environmental charter Al-Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth – from its launch at the United Nations Environment Assembly in Kenya to grassroots initiatives in the United Kingdom and water-stressed communities in Jordan.
Over the course of a year, she meets eco-theologians, farmers, faith leaders and youth activists who draw on Islamic principles of stewardship, justice and balance (mizan) to protect the planet.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with Amanda Burrell, reflecting on the making of the episode and the wider questions it raises.
