Shameless obscenity was once subversive, undermining of traditional domination, undermining false pride. In the 1960s protesting students liked to use obscene words or make obscene gestures to embarrass figures in power and denounce their hypocrisy. However, what we are getting today, with the explosion of public obscenity, is not the disappearance of authority and ‘master’ figures, but their forceful reappearance – we are getting something unimaginable a decade or two ago, ‘obscene masters’. Slavoj Žižek, the renowned political philosopher, analyses leadership today in a talk organised in collaboration with Encore Publications.
The talk, given in English, with Turkish translation, is sold out, but will be available online at the Pera Museum youtube channel
