The Sound of the Lectionary

Chant, Architecture, and Salvation in Byzantium

November 30, 2021
14.00 EST / 19.00 GMT

The second lecture of the Mary Jaharis Center and the Boston Byzantine Music Festival Lecture Series will take place on 30 November at 2.00 pm EST (10.00 pm Turkish time). Dr Roland Betancourt of University of California, Irvine, will present on the soundscapes of the Divine Liturgy during the Middle Byzantine period. All components of the liturgy were purposely crafted by the Byzantines to produce a unified experience that not only glorified God but also reinforced concepts of divinity and salvation for the worshipers. Experiences are lived and remembered through all the senses, and Prof. Betancourt’s work on the auditory aspects of Byzantine liturgy is an important step to help us understand the sensory heritage of Byzantine religious culture.

This lecture will take place live on Zoom, followed by a question and answer period. Please register to receive the Zoom link. An email with the relevant Zoom information will be sent 1–2 hours ahead of the lecture. Registration closes at 11:00 AM (ET) on 30 November. Register here.
