The British prehistorian Winifred Lamb (1894 – 1963) was one of the first women to direct an archaeological excavation in Turkey.
On 16 December at 18.00 (UK time), David Gill will give a talk about Lamb's archaeological work in the region, ranging from excavations at Mycenae and prehistoric mounds in Macedonia to Kusura in the late 30s. During the Second World War, was recruited by Sir Leonard Woolley to work for the BBC, initially in the Greek section; in 1942 she moved into the Turkish section where she
compiled monthly briefing papers on broadcasts to Turkey.
