Gezi Park


This modest inner-city park right next to Taksim Square became the subject of the hottest summer (politically speaking) in Turkey’s recent history when plans to turn it into yet another shopping centre resulted in thousands of protesters occupying the park for weeks on end. After the protests ended, the municipality cleaned up the park and brought it back to order. Although a court in Istanbul lifted the injunction which prevented construction in the park in late July 2013, construction of the shopping centre has been halted for now. But, who knows what is to come.
