Dux Schneider was born in the USA in 1924 and grew up in Belgium and England. After working in publishing, he turned to writing. Inspired by Victorian travel books, he and his wife Monica went to eastern Turkey and were among the first climbers in Hakkari Province.
The travel writer Dux Schneider explored Turkey in the 1970s. in the days before tourism. In particular he roamed the remote Bolkar Mountains to write, in 1978, a classic book, Bolkar:Travels with a Donkey in the Taurus Mountains. It has now been published in English for the first time.
