Etton educated Robert Byron (1905–41) was a travel writer, art critic and historian best known for The Road to Oxiana (1936), a record of his journey to Persia and Afghanistan. His first book, Europe in the Looking-Glass, serialised on BBC radio in 2012, describes a road trip with friends to Athens in 1926. Distantly related to the mad-bad Lord, Byron was a philhelline who brought renewed interest in Byzantium, and his subsequent books include The Byzantine Achievement and The Station, one of the first and best accounts of the monasteries on Mt Athos.
