On September 19 Borusan Contemporary, located in the celebrated ‘Haunted Mansion’ (Perili Köşk) overlooking the Bosphorus in Rumelihisarı, Istanbul, is opening a new exhibition entitled AI, Algorithms and the ‘Haunted Mansion’.
The exhibition explores how artificial intelligence, algorithms and data technologies are reshaping the way we produce, perceive and remember images. The show brings together major works from the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection by an exceptional roster of new media and technology-based artists including Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Memo Akten, teamLab, Quayola, Zimoun, DRIFT, Marco Brambilla and Daniel Canogar alongside works on paper by Turkish artist Kemal Önsoy. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Kumru Eren, Director of Borusan Contemporary.
The title is drawn from the building itself. Perili Köşk earned its nickname ‘the Haunted Mansion’ after construction stalled during WWI, leaving its upper floors unfinished. The exhibition reframes this history through the lens of AI and algorithmic systems: instead of ghosts, the mansion is now ‘haunted’ by invisible technological processes that shape contemporary life.
As machine systems increasingly generate and interpret images, the exhibition asks what happens to authorship, memory and representation – a question with obvious resonance well beyond the art world. It runs in parallel with Time Space Geometry, Italian photographer Olivo Barbieri’s first solo exhibition in Türkiye, featuring newly-commissioned work documenting nine ancient Turkish cities.
Both exhibitions run from 19 September 2026 to 15 August 2027.
