The ‘La Venexiana’ ensemble – Emanuela Galli and Agnese Allegra (sopranos), Giacomo Schiavo (tenor), Gabriele Palomba (theorbo and conductor) and Dario Carpanese (harpsichord) – perform music by the important Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643), who ‘bridged the gap’ between the Renaissance and Baroque periods and whose music sounds surprisingly modern, as well as pieces by other composers of those times. The composer Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) is generally regarded as the most important German composer before J.S. Bach. The theorbo is a plucked stringed instrument of the lute family used during the Baroque period.
During the concert, the ‘Teatri 35’ group (Antonella Parrella, Gaetano Coccia and Francesco Ottavio de Santis) will ‘re-enact’ famous paintings by Caravaggio (1571–1610).
Before the performance, there will be both a pre-concert talk and a pre-concert podcast. The talk (from 19:00 to 19:40) – on the theme of ‘Two Great Masters of the Baroque Era: Caravaggio and Monteverdi’ – will be given (in Turkish) by Aydın Büke and Serap Yüzgüller. The podcast, meanwhile, will be given (in Turkish) by Gündüz Vassaf and Asuman Kafaoğlu Büke on the subject of ‘The Caravaggio Era’. It will be available from May 28 on Karnaval’s Spotify and Apple Music accounts, and on the İKSV’s Spotify account.
