The Opus Amadeus Organ Festival, the brainchild of Mr Mehmet Mestçi of Artisan Organizasyon, is now presenting its seventh edition. This year’s festival features recitals by organists from Italy, Spain and Hungary. All three take place in the Italian Catholic Church of St Anthony of Padua (Saint-Antoine, San Antonio or Sent Antuan) in Galatasaray, built in the Italian neo-Gothic style between 1906 and 1912 and designed by the Levantine architect Giulio Mongeri, a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts. Pope John XXIII preached here for 10 years while serving as the Vatican’s ambassador to Turkey before being chosen as pope; there is a statue of him in the courtyard.
