In 1663, English ambassador Lord Winchilsea considered Constantinople more worth visiting than all of Italy. European travellers embarked on the Grand Tour to explore the Ottoman Empire’s power, ceremonies, classical antiquities, and exotic experiences, including sexual adventures. Dr. Philip Mansel, known for his books on various historical subjects, will illustrate this talk with over 150 unpublished pictures of Ottoman sites and discuss the Empire’s allure during challenging times.
