What’s the Meaning of Stonehenge?

An Exploration of Public Perceptions & Public Engagement

May 16, 2023
17:00-18:30 (London UTC+1) | 19:00-20:30 (Ankara UTC+3)

British Institute at Ankara, Tahran Caddesi 24, Kavaklıdere, 06700 Ankara (10 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH)

This talk will discuss the multiple meanings and mythic appropriations of the site of Stonehenge, using data drawn from public comments on newspaper articles. This work demonstrates multiple tensions in public discourse on archaeology, between rebellion against scientific authority, the need for ‘nostalgia for a sacred time’, humour, common sense and tropes of national identities. The talk will be in Turkish and English. Registration for both online and in-person attendance is required.
