Yeldeğirmeni Arts Centre
(Yeldeğirmeni Sanat)

Rasimpaşa Mah., İskele Sok. No 43/1, Kadıköy, 34716 Istanbul
Tel: +90 216 337 00 58

Ferries to Kadıköy leave from Eminönü, Karaköy, Kabataş and Beşiktaş. Dolmuş taxis to Kadıköy run from a stop in Taksim Square to the left of the Atatürk Cultural Centre. Metrobuses from Mecidiyeköy, Gayrettepe and Zincirlikuyu terminate at the Söğütlüçeşme railway station and Marmaray stop in the valley behind Kadıköy. From there, walk up Söğütlüçeşme Caddesi to the Altıyol crossroads, where there is a statue of a bull, and continue on down to the ferry terminal. (The M4 metro line from Sabiha Gökçen Airport terminates at a station close to the Kadıköy ferry terminals.)

Standing outside the ferry terminal at the bottom of Söğütlüçeşme Caddesi (Kadıköy’s main street), face the sea and turn right along Rıhtım Caddesi, the coast road. Passing the entrance to Nemlizade Sokak, you will come to a corner where the busy Orgeneral Şahap Gürler Caddesi swings round to the right. At this corner, turn right into İskele Sokak, a side street. Here, on the right, you will see ‘Osmangazi İlkokulu’ (the old Haydarpaşa German School, built in 1903 for the children of workers at Haydarpaşa Station). Yeldeğirmeni Arts Centre (Yeldeğirmeni Sanat) is further up the hill on your left.

The Notre Dame du Rosaire Church, built in 1895, is now the Yeldeğirmeni Arts Centre (Yeldeğirmeni Sanat), a cultural centre under the direction of Kadıköy municipality, hosting concerts and talks in the heart of this up-and-coming neighbourhood. It is located in the historically interesting Yeldeğirmeni (‘Windmill’) suburb of Kadıköy, near the coast on the northern (i.e., Haydarpaşa) side of the ferry port.

Bora Çeliker Quartet: ’Tis Autumn

Guitarist Bora Çeliker, who is also a singer, is not just a highly experienced performer of mainstream jazz and blues but also a gifted improviser. At university in Ankara, he founded blues groups by the name of ‘The Crawling Snakes’, ‘The Jukes’ and ‘The King Bees’. Having played mainly blues up to that time, in 1999 he launched out into jazz, participating in a group that was led by Janusz Szprot, a Polish musician who had come to Ankara to head up the Jazz Department of Bilkent University. Two years later, he started playing in the Alan Ginter Quartet with the legendary Turkish pianist, saxophonist and composer Tuna Ötenel. Bora Çeliker has in the past played with a number of leading Turkish jazz musicians, as well as with former Bilgi University jazz teacher Ricky Ford. On November 06, he is joined by Maya Muz (piano), Alp Erdoğmuş (double bass) and Mustafa Kemal Emirel (drums) in autumn-themed songs by composers such as Vernon Duke, Kurt Weil, Bernice Petkere, Woody Herman, Bob Moses, Wayne Shorter, Richie Beirach and Kenny Garrett.
