In the colour favoured by yalı owners – oxblood – the Hadi Bey Yalı used to be called Manford House when Kandilli was favoured by the British. Burnt down in the 1916 blaze, it was sensitively rebuilt some 15 years later by Turgut Canserver, the 20th-century architect who came closest to embracing the ethos of the Ottoman yalı.
