The magic of raku
Raku is a traditional type of Japanese pottery which has been further developed and adapted by contemporary potters such as Serap Yurdaer. The beautiful crackled glaze and metalic lustre are achieved by removing the pieces from the kiln while still glowing hot, cooling them by various means and controllong the available oxygen. Traditionally hand formed, rather than thrown, each piece is a unique work of art.
Raku fired ware is fragile, porous, and should be treated as decorative. Its use for food should be limited to dry food.
