Merkur Gallery invites art lovers to their latest exhibition, a special selection of Ara Güler’s many iconic Istanbul photographs as well as the less well-known photographs of Izmir, Bodrum and Aphrodisias, which he visited many times as a reporter.
Ara Güler was an Armenian-Turkish photojournalist, nicknamed “the Eye of Istanbul” or “the Photographer of Istanbul”. He was one of Turkey’s few internationally known photographers. Some critics consider his most renowned photographs to be the melancholic black and white pictures of Istanbul taken mainly in the 1950s and 1960s, often with a Leica camera.
This exhibition was organised with the cooperation of the Ara Güler Foundation.
