Dalyan

The small farming town and resort lies by the reed banks of the Dalyan river that empties Lake Köyceğiz into the sea. Rock tombs can be seen above it at Caunus, once a port, and now 8km from inland. Dalyan is also known for the sanctuary for loggerhead turtles on İztuzu Beach. They have been protected from major tourist development largely thanks to the campaigning efforts of June Haimoff, described in her 1997 book Kaptan June and the Turtles. Her latest biographical work, Kaptan June Makes Waves, is reviewed in Cornucopia 53. A second edition published in 2002 and titled,”Kaptan June and the Dalyan Turtles”, brought the story up to date. The Kaptan June Sea Turtle Conservation Foundation was established in 2011 and has its Information Centre and Museum in a hut by the lake.
