Perhaps the oldest and most important of the five major cities of the Lycian confederacy, Tlos stands back from the Xanthos River, surveying its progress. Set at a lofty height with an acropolis that has both Lycian and Ottoman stonework, the scattering of buildings includes a theatre and necropolis. Bellerophon, mythical slayer of monsters, is said to have lived here and can be seen riding Pegasus in a carving on a rock-cut tomb. There are attractive villages around the site.
