JF Lewis,
Watercolour over pencil and black chalk heightened with bodycolour
37.5 x 27.5 cm
Private collection
Galerie Ary Jan of Paris and London’s Kent Antiques join forces with Colnaghi’s Mayfair gallery for an Orientalist show in which Cairo and Jerusalem feature large in canvases awash with turbans and loose-fitting sumptuous attire. Readers of Cornucopia will gravitate to this intriguing JF Lewis portrait, assumed to be of John Gardner Wilkinson, in Turkish costume, c1850. Wilkinson was an English Orientalist of the old school, full of learning and author of A Handbook for Travellers in Egypt, published in 1867.
