The film Remembering Traugott Fuchs: German Exile, Artistic Legacy, and Intellectual Life in Turkey is about Traugott Fuchs, a German scholar, artist, and poet who fled Nazi persecution and found refuge in Turkey. The documentary traces his life between Germany and Istanbul, highlighting not only exile, displacement, and artistic creation, but also Fuchs’s lasting contributions to academic and intellectual life in Turkey. As a teacher, mentor, and cultural mediator, he helped shape generations of students and participated in the vibrant world of émigré scholarship that enriched Turkish universities in the twentieth century. The film also explores the afterlife of his estate, now preserved at the Orient-Institut Istanbul. Richard Wittmann, the deputy director of the Orient-Institut Istanbul, will give a talk after the film.
