Dark waters (Kara Su) run deep in the meadows of Karasu Bazar. An ancient oak tree marks the spot where the clans gathered before embarking on campaigns of conquest. The clan elders gathered on the white clifs (Akkaya) overlooking the plain to choose their khan. Bilohirsk, the Ukranainian/Russian name, also refers to the white cliffs. In the tiny village, once a cosmopolitan city, there is a delightful, one-room Tatar ethnographic museum.
