In the centre of Houston’s Museum District, the MFAH is a cultural complex of museums, sculpture garden and education facilities. Founded in 1900, it has a collection of buildings from neoclassical to Modernist Mies Van der Rohe. It recently entered into partnership with the Kuwait-based al-Sabah Collection. The result is Arts of Islamic Lands, with some 250 works altogether. Highlights are a 16th-century Ottoman Turkish prayer carpet, a glass mosque lamp from 14th-century Cairo, and early gold jewellery from Afghanistan and Syria. The museum also has an Antiquities collection.
