It flourished from the 6th century BC until Genghis Khan arrived to wreak destruction in 1220. There is not much to see of the Zoroastran temples and the Graeco-Bactrian and Seluccid remains in the 120-hectare site, but the museum makes up for it with excellent murals depicting a royal Sogdian bridal procession with a white elephant and officials as well as Turkic, Korean and Chinese ambassadors bearing silk.
