The remains of the ancient city lie on the Afrosiab hill just beyond Samarkand’s necoropolis. It flourished from the 6th century BC until Genghis Khan arrived to wreak destruction in 1220. There is not much to see of the Zoroastran temples and the Graeco-Bactrian and Seluccid remains in the 120-hectare site, but the museum makes up for it with excellent murals depicting a royal Sogdian bridal procession with a white elephant and officials as well as Turkic, Korean and Chinese ambassadors bearing silk.
