Sultan Abdülmecid’s remarkable, underrated barracks, built by William James Smith between 1846 and 1852, was another cornerstone of the sultan’s new Istanbul, and is the ideal home for Istanbul Technical University’s Faculty of Architecture. The building was used as a hospital by the French during the Crimean War, while the British occupied the Selimiye Barracks across the Bosphorus.
