Pera House in Tepebaşı, Stratford Canning’s British Embassy, is pure Pall Mall. Although the Scottish architect William James Smith is credited as having built it, Charles Barry – better known for his Palace of Westminster – is also said to have had a hand. The choice of location is strange – a garden overlooking the once smelly Golden Horn, rather than the breezy Bosphorus.
These days, it still acts at the British Consulate and sometimes as a venue for concerts, lectures and other events.
