Ferries from Turkey's largest port serve several Mediterranean ports, including Cyprus. It has a good fish market in the old town, and a distinctive cuisine, which includes popular grilled liver, ciğer kebap, and şalgam turnip juice. There is a small archaeological museum, a naval museum and a museum in the former German Ambassador’s residency dedicated to Ataturk, who stayed here for 11 days. The university, opened in 1992, is involved in the International Music Festival every spring. Most events are held in the Mersin Halkevi, built during the 1930s enlightenment, but concerts are also held in St Paul’s Church in Tarsus and the sinkhole by the ancient city of Kanlıdivane, about 30 miles from the city near the Çanakçı rock tombs
