Carmen, by Georges Bizet (1838–75), is one of the best-loved operas of all time. Based on a short novel by Prosper Mérimée, the story is a tragic one that revolves around the love life of a gypsy girl in Seville. Panned by the critics for its unorthodoxy at its first performance in Paris in 1875, Bizet’s masterwork became widely celebrated only after his death. This performance is directed by Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini.
